Xan Dye is exploring spaces between binaries. In an improvised performance, the artist works with rocking movement to reflect queer, trans, and neurodivergent becoming – questioning how we can make space for complexity and fluidity.
Invoking Virginia Woolf’s quote “I am rooted but I flow,” Xan Dye explores the paradox of identity and transformation and searches for a state that is grounded and agile, stable and changeable. Xan Dye’s performance practice is a constant process of questioning, of experiencing and becoming through a rocking movement that is rooted in trans, non-binary, neurodivergent and queer identity. The improvisation runs through a variety of experiences and forms of expression, and the performance gives room to contradictory needs and desires.

Artist's Note by Xan Dye
“There is something I’m wanting to unearth about rocking as a way of being that is between or beyond binaries
a ‘both-and’ state
Both pouring weight into the ground and pushing back out of it
Yielding and resisting.
Moving and static.
Resting and releasing.
Repeating
and
shifting into something new
The trance of rocking can be a tuning in and tuning out of conscious awareness
Both dissociative and intensely feeling.
I like that It feels like dancing and not dancing -and that’s why to me it feels like a cripping, a queering -a neuro-queering of dance”
