Accessibility

As a HAU Hebbel am Ufer festival we are part of an institution that is always learning. We are working on making the programme, the theatres, and our work processes gradually more diverse and inclusive. To foster this development, we collaborate with external consultants in interdepartmental working groups in the fields of diversity, accessibility, and sustainability in order to actively shape the organisational culture. Currently, HAU is only partially accessible. On this page, you can find more information about each individual venue as well as information on the programme and what we offer in terms of accessibility.

Sign Language Translation

Some productions will be interpreted into German sign language. Please contact us if required to get the best possible view of the interpretation.

Relaxed Performances

Relaxed performances aim to welcome all visitors for whom sitting still for long periods of time in the theatre is a barrier. This applies in particular to neurodivergent people (including those with autism, Tourette's syndrome or ADHD), people with learning difficulties and people with chronic pain. However, many other people may also choose to attend a relaxed performance, either because they need to or because they like the inclusive environment.

27.–29.8. | J Neve Harrington | “Screensaver Series: Sleeper Softwares”

  • Derniers Feux

Fireworks are set off during the performance. A fog machine (hazer) is used and the performance includes passages with high noise levels.

  • I am rooted but I flow

This is a relaxed performance. The audience is invited to arrive at the time stated on the ticket and stay as long as they wish. Visitors can leave the hall at any time and return. The audience is invited to choose freely between different seating options in the studio (e.g. beanbags, mats, the floor, etc.). There are three improvisation loops that are similar. LED light is used, which can be positioned in close proximity to the audience. The soundscape consists of low frequencies, high-pitched and sharp tones, abrupt changes in volume, multiple simultaneously audible sound sources, and repetitive rhythmic patterns. There is a separate, quieter Relaxed Space in the foyer of the HAU2 Studio, where stimming toys, eye masks, comfortable seating and ear protection are available free of charge. Depending on capacity, tickets are still available for purchase at the box office. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact the admission staff on site.

Everyone is encouraged to find different ways to get comfortable and to change their seating options and perspectives throughout the performance. Lying down is welcome. A distance to the performers should be maintained and this will be clearly indicated by the dance floor. The sound moves in the space and you can choose to be closer to or further from the speakers. The lighting situation includes some natural light and some stage lighting. The highest intensity is 30 mins into the work and there are no sudden changes or total blackouts.
