Tanz im August Special Edition 2020

32nd International Festival Berlin
21.–30.8.2020 | Online & Outdoor

Welcome to Tanz im August 2020!
We are proud to present the Special Edition 2020 with contributions from artists coming from 18 different countries from all continents. 10 days of online events and public space works were developed in the last 12 weeks in close collaboration with the invited artists. This program is designed with full commitment to the safety of our artists, audience members and general public.
Two programme lines will highlight artistic imagination as a powerful force, that can help us to navigate through these unprecedented times into the future. Meet the Artist is a series of events presenting artistic contributions online and in public space. Happy to Listen invites us to listen actively to concerns and experiences thriving from different realities and offering new perspectives, critiques and resistances to be able to re-think our future.

Together with Zürcher Theater Spektakel we will host a Digital Conference and the Bibliothek im August is open daily as a meeting place with a limited-access outdoor public-viewing area. There you can find coffee and books, and from there you can also pick up your personal copy of Magazin im August.

We truly miss meeting live, but are equally excited about the new ways of bringing artists and audiences together online and in public space. This adventure will shape how we share, exchange and present dance in the coming years too. Till we meet again, please, stay safe!

FESTIVAL CALENDAR

Magazin im August

The festival is accompanied by a special edition of our Magazin im August, with portraits, interviews and articles on this year’s Special Edition as well as contributions from and about the artists whose work we would have liked to present live on stage. The Magazin im August will be available in print in the Bibliothek im August and as a digital edition here.

Meet the Artist | OUTDOOR

The Meet the Artist productions in public space include William Forsythe's short choreographic instructions, located across the city, and media- and performance art collective LIGNA’s new radio ballet, taking place in open air.

Meet the Artist | ONLINE

For the Special Edition 2020, Tanz im August presents online and outdoor works by artists from the original line-up as well as newly invited artists. With the open format Meet the Artist, artists give an insight into their practices with audio choreographies, digital discussion forums, texts, films and online performances. Many of the works will be followed by streamed artist talks and live Q&As.

Happy to Listen

The new format Happy to Listen makes space for voices from marginalized and un(der)represented communities. With the discussion topics selected and defined together with moderators and panelists, this platform offers the possibility to actively listen to those whose concerns and views have been formed by different realities and experiences. To the dates.

How to Be Together? Conversations on International Exchange and Collaboration in the Performing Arts

Jointly organised by the Zürcher Theater Spektakel and Tanz im August / HAU Hebbel am Ufer.

In answer to the challenging situation that is preventing people from meeting physically right around the world, we have planned a series of discussions about the future of interchange and international collaboration in the performing arts. This three-day programme aims to inspire a trans-continental dialogue between artists, art organisers and cultural politicians, and to link those who are active in different geographical, cultural, political and professional areas.

Bibliothek im August

Every year the festival artists select three books that are important to their work and their way of thinking. Over the last five years, the collection has grown with each edition and it now features almost 500 books. The Bibliothek im August library will be open every day in the former WAU restaurant and café. Come by and browse the shelves, meet with other festival-goers and enjoy a beverage or a snack in front of HAU2.

1000 Scores

“1000 Scores. Piece for Here, Now & Later”, a project by Helgard Haug, David Helbich and Cornelius Puschke, produced by Rimini Apparat, offers an online platform for scores commissioned from various artists.

With contributions by Chiara Bersani, Maija Hirvanen, Victoria Hunt, Choy Ka Fai, Kettly Noël (Commissioned by Tanz im August / HAU Hebbel am Ufer & 1000 Scores. Pieces for Here, Now & Later).

Public Viewing

For this year's Tanz im August Special Edition 2020, there will be an outside public viewing area in front of HAU2. The audience is welcome to gather here, in compliance with the current safety regulations, and follow the daily live streams of the online programme over a drink or a snack.
