In “Specky Clark”, Oona Doherty tells the story of her great-great-grandfather, a boy from Belfast who started working in a slaughterhouse at a young age. Using dance, theatre, and Irish folklore, she paints a powerful picture of a tough life and inner strength.

In her new work, choreographer Oona Doherty, who is always fearlessly inclined towards the darker sides of existence, deals with her own family history. Named after and inspired by her great-great-grandfather, “Specky Clark” follows the life of a working-class Belfast boy who moves in with his two aunts at the age of ten to work in a slaughterhouse. She tells this story in theatrical scenes, and combines them with contemporary dance, Irish folklore and multi-layered inspirations. These range from the cult film “Billy Elliot” to George Orwell’s novel “Animal Farm” and works by the painter Francis Bacon.
