Halima Cassells

The artist and community activist from Detroit Halima Cassells presents her works in various contexts. She has created a number of important public works including an alternative Congressional Seal commemorating Rosa Parks. After a ten-year stint on the East Coast, Cassels returned home where she now creates new research works. For example she proposes spaces for authentic encounters, interactive installations and recently a book written and designed together with her daughters. Her varied roles are marked by a deep bond to her community and to fostering communal inter-connectivity. She works as an independent artist while at the same time taking part in the Oakland Avenue Artists Coalition, the Center for Community Based Enterprise, PeoplesHub.org. Cassells is a co-founder of the Free Market of Detroit. The festival “Detroit – Berlin: One Circle” brings her to HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Berlin for the first time.
