Adrian Piper

Adrian Piper, born 1948 in New York City, is a conceptual artist of the first generation. Since 2005 she has lived and worked in Berlin. Funk Lessons is one of her best known performance video works and at the same time a pioneering work in the arts with respect to the rhythm & blues dance tradition. It shows the artist in an interactive performance teaching students, passersby and local artists how to listen and to dance to funk music. In her performance, Piper is pointing out the high influence that soul music and the connected dance styles have had on American art and culture in general.
