Sebastian Matthias

Berlin-based, German choreographer and dance researcher Sebastian Matthias deals with modular improvisation systems that he develops collectively with the dancers. He works with theatres and production houses worldwide such as Kampnagel, Tanzhaus NRW, Luzerner Theater, Festival Tokyo, Sophiensaele Berlin and CORPUS/Royal Danish Ballet. In the 2019/20 to 2021/22 seasons he worked closely with Bürger:Bühne at Staatsschauspiel Dresden and Theater Basel as part of the “Doppelpass” funding from the German Federal Cultural Foundation. He elaborated on his artistic-scientific research approach in his doctoral thesis “Groove Feeling - Collectivity between dancefloor and stage” at HafenCity University Hamburg in collaboration with K3 | Tanzplan Hamburg. Since 2019 Matthias works as a research assistant for the project “Participatory Art Based Research” hosted by HCU Hamburg, K3 and Fundus/Forschungstheater.
