Tanz im August 2004

16th International Festival Berlin
12.8. – 4.9.2004

TANZ IM AUGUST focuses on current developments in dance and performance. This year's large-scale productions include the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault from Montréal and Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal. On the whole, the program shows a “return to movement”, work that goes beyond the abstract exploration of “pure choreography”. For example, Tere O'Connor, whose work makes a political statement, or Meg Stuart and Andréya Ouamba, whose pieces explore various aspects of the body such as its cultural self-understanding, its relationships, economic value, and forms of artistic expression. With the work of such fresh talents as Mette Ingvartsen, Isabelle Schad and Simone Aughterlony, we present some of the new directions taken by a younger generation of artists.

(Excerpt from the foreword to the 2004 programme by Ulrike Becker, Matthias Lilienthal, Bettina Masuch and André Thériault)
