Tanz im August 2012

Tanz im August 2012

24th International Festival Berlin
10. – 25.8.2012

This 24th edition of Tanz im August features over 30 international productions – you can discover them at 12 Berlin venues.

Two themes reappear throughout this year’s program: the relationship between language and movement as well as the creation of communities. The spoken or written word plays a key role in numerous pieces. Language is not just used as a means of narration, but also as a soundscape, an impulse for movement or the basis for the choreography. Lisbeth Gruwez, Sofia Diaz & Vítor Roriz or Ishmael Houston-Jones and Gunilla Heilborn all work with this topic. On the other hand, artists like Saša Asentić, Ehud Darash, Juan Dominguez or the kom.post artist collective developed participative formats that aim to create temporary communities. The audience is invited to participate, to actively shape performances, to take part in workshops or discussions.

The 2nd Berlin dance film night as well as the sideshow, curated by Eva Meyer-Keller/Rico Repotente–incl. the sidebar at the Podewil – will complete our program. This year’s cooperation between Tanz im August and Tanznacht Berlin 2012, features a. o. the site specific project »X-Choreografen« as well as »Grind« by Van Dinther/Tiikkainen/Kiers.

The Sea Within

Lisbeth Gruwez has made a name for herself with unusual, precise choreographies. In her new piece, “The Sea Within,” the Belgian dancer and choreographer no longer wishes to bring order into chaos but to allow chaos to create its own order.
